At the risk of sounding pious, over the last 20 years I have studied tuning, intonation, and temperament to a level that few have and I would wish on no one. From historical study, to practical field work, to purely academic research, I'm quite sure I could write a comprehensive dissertation on the topic from memory. Now with all these self-accolades out of the way, I must say - That was a very, very well put article. While details in our end solutions and shuffling of practical compromises may differ a bit (to some degree simply by pragmatics of repair vs construction), you did an excellent job here of conveying points that anyone inspired to chase the wind of 'perfect intonation' should understand. Very well written piece. |

I like your style of writing, Nigel. Are the 3500 intonations you mentioned from scales of different cultures around the world? What is the site you refer to? I'm going to try my first compensated nut very soon, wish me luck! |

"The fifths are pretty close to JI but the thirds are all noticeably sharp (by around 14 cents) so this universally accepted compromise has flaws even if executed with precision." Good article. And the statement above should be burned into the brain of anyone who has agonized over cutting fret slots to an accuracy of 1/128th of an inch. |
